I usually make sure we have a good hearty breakfast before we start filming, but in this case, we were actually shooting a good hearty breakfast recipe, so we decided to go hungry until the work was done. Yes, we let chocolate be our reward! So with coffee in hand, froggy voice, and bleary eyes, we set off to film one of our easier episodes early in the morning.
There’s not many recipes of mine that don’t require cooking, so I figured we should take advantage of not having to be in the hot kitchen by not being in the hot kitchen! We moved our set to our “dining room,” which coincidentally already looks like a set, and filmed our second summer appropriate episode of the season.
It’s a good thing I took the time to clean up and organize my shelves in our dining room during our break between Seasons 2 and 3 because it was my backdrop for the entire episode. At first, I thought it might look too cluttered, but it turned out okay so I think we’ll be filming from there more often when we can. We were a little worried at first because there aren’t any windows there, but our lighting system definitely helped. But for the food photography part, we had to head back into the kitchen and take advantage of the natural sunlight.
Then a few HOURS later, after filming and photography, we FINALLY got to eat our breakfast…or more like brunch! You can watch our actual Chocolate Overnight Oats recipe video HERE, but you can also catch a look behind the scenes in our video below:

I’ll talk more about why I wanted to make these overnight oats in our next entry, but it did take me multiple attempts to get the flavor and consistency of these oats just right. I’m a pretty picky person when it comes to recipe developing. So needless to say, this wasn’t Joe’s first time tasting this. In fact, we eat this often, but trust me, he doesn’t mind.
For this shoot, I’m happy to report that there were no fights, mistakes, or real obstacles. It was pretty easy and straight-forward. We love those kinds of days. We NEED those kinds of days to keep us sane. The only challenging thing was trying to get these oats to look good on camera. Let’s face it, they’re pretty much brown blobs in a bowl… not the most attractive thing in the world to photograph, but I think we got it!
Thanks for coming behind the scenes with us! *EDIT: Our Chocolate Overnight Oats recipe video is out now. You can watch it HERE.
