A wedding and New York memories

Every time we’re back on the east coast, it always brings back memories.  It’s because that’s where some hardships were faced, many good times were had, life long friendships were made, and where we got married.  New York especially will always have a special place in our hearts.  That’s where Joe worked as an art director in advertising, where I worked as a chef, where we dated, and even got engaged!

If you read my last entry and watched Our Boring Road Trip VIDEO, then you know that we recently drove to the east coast and will be sharing a little series of vlogs from our time there.

We were there for about a week and a half, and one of the reasons was for our friends’ John and Heather’s wedding in New York.  We intentionally didn’t shoot a whole lot of footage at the wedding itself because we wanted to respect their privacy and enjoy the celebration ourselves.

The venue was gorgeous, the food was tasty, and we had a great time.  We were so happy for the cute couple and honored to be able to celebrate such a joyous occasion with them.

We were staying in the suburbs of Philadelphia with my parents, and had a bit of a drive to get to New York.  The wedding was held at this beautiful mansion somewhere along the cusp of Queens and Long Island.  Since we had a few hours to kill, we decided to share some of our New York memories with you during the drive.  But you can watch more of that in our video:

We were worried that at the wedding we were going to be the lonely loser couple twiddling our thumbs in the corner, since we don’t really share the same circle of friends.  I know you’ve probably attended a wedding like that at some point in your life and know what I’m talking about, right?  But luckily, we had a pleasant surprise of being seated next to these dapper fellows we knew in California.  Shout out to our friends Edwin and Gene!  It was great seeing you guys.

The thing about weddings is that they always make me think about my own wedding.  Is that vain?  Any married people wanna say amen?  Sometimes it brings you back to that stressful planning time, and you think to yourself, “whew…glad that’s over.”   But mostly, it makes you think fondly of all the fun you had, being surrounded by your friends and family who are there to support and celebrate with you.

We got married in 2008, but man it feels like FOREVER ago.  Surprisingly, we didn’t get married in New York.  It was too expensive for us at the time, but we did get engaged there, at the top of the Rockefeller Center.  And before that, we ate dinner at the restaurant I used to cook in when I attended culinary school.  So yeah, New York will always be part of our history.

After John and Heather’s wedding, we were planning on staying overnight in the city just to hang out and reminisce.  We had to “ditch” our car somewhere so we wouldn’t have to worry about finding and paying for ridonculously priced parking.  Luckily, we were familiar with Queens since Joe and I both spent some time living there, so we knew some secret spots!  Then we had to take the subway around midnight to get down to the World Trade Center where we were staying.

We spent two more days in the city, so we’ll continue to share with you what we did there in our next vlog.  So stay tuned for that.  Thanks for spending some time with us in the car…again. What city do you keep fondly in your heart and why?  Let me know in the comments…I’d love to hear your memories.  We’ll see you next time.
