Okay, confession time again. This video was shot a few months ago, before summer hit, and before I got bangs. By the way, why I always decide to get bangs when it’s hot outside and they start sticking to my face, I really don’t know. But I digress. I really wanted to share this earlier, but other things kept pushing it back. Well, I finally got around to editing it and thought that you might still want to know what we got on our Costco haul.
Since then, we’ve gone on several other trips to Costco…enough to make them notice us and even CONVINCE us to switch to an Executive membership actually, so technically, these groceries are now no longer in my fridge. But they still apply, especially when I refer to my “staple items,” or things I tend to buy every time I go to Costco.
I also give explanations of why I buy them as well as some tips you might find helpful. Let me remind you that we are a two person household and we still manage to buy big bulk items and have no waste. You’ll see that the freezer is my best friend.
But if you’re curious to know what I bought on one of my sorta kinda recent trips to Costco, watch our Costco Haul video below:
The truth is that I usually do all our grocery shopping alone. Joe knows nothing about food so he has no opinion on what he wants to eat anyways. So on smaller trips to other stores, I go alone. But on Costco days, I make him come out with me. To me, it’s not only about lugging the heavier bulky items, which definitely helps, but it’s also kind of like a mini date for us. Maybe it’s a lame date, but we usually get a hot dog, or a slice of pizza and do our shopping.
Joe usually strolls around the electronics section while I zoom around the aisles like I own the place. And then he catches up to me and we wander around to fill up on samples together. But that’s what gets me in trouble.
If you just watched the video, you saw that I got suckered into buying the frozen pre-made cheeseburgers because I had a delicious morsel of a sample one day.
I ended up buying it as one of my “convenience” items, and I don’t regret it. We both like them. The key is though that I don’t really follow the microwave instructions because then the bread gets too hard. I microwave the patty first on its own and then I nuke it together with the bun for a few seconds just until it’s soft and fluffy. And of course, I gourmet it up anyways with this or that. So I guess it’s not that convenient for me after all.
And I picked up this package of chicken sausages with apple and cheese as another quick and easy item. I REALLY like these and I find so many uses for them. We already ran out of them and I forgot to pick them up on our last trip, so now I’m sad.
There were a few other things I bought, but they didn’t make it into the cut for the video because either it wasn’t worth mentioning, or I didn’t like it, like the peach mango salsa for instance. I thought it was overall TOO sweet. I bought a jar of a different brand at Target and I thought it would be similar, but this one was too sweet, and I ended up having to dull down the sweetness with more acid and some spice just so it wouldn’t go to waste.
And there were some things I got on this trip that I think I will start picking up more regularly from now on, like this pre-made pesto. I’m a fan of making my own pesto normally, but really, when you’re feeling lazy and you don’t want to bother dealing with your food processor, this is a good alternative. It’s nice and fresh, and well seasoned. I end up using it for tons of stuff.
Well, hope you enjoyed my Costco haul vlog. Leave me a comment below if you want to see more of these kinds of vlogs. I don’t know about you, but I love seeing what other people buy at the grocery store. And I always stare at what people are pulling out of their carts and onto the conveyor belt when they’re at the check out line. A bit stalker-ish? Maybe. What do you like to buy at Costco? Maybe I’ll give it a try next time.
Hi Chef Julie,
My husband and I are also a two person household, so we have never thought that shopping at Costco made sense for us, but this vlog has changed my mind. By the way, your kale salad recipe was our first adventure with kale, and the turkey and pepper jack cheese puff pastry recipe inspired us to try turkey and Gouda with apricot preserves mixed with mustard–so delicious! We have added roasted garbanzo beans to your kale salad and found it to be really tasty and filling. Thank you for the easy to follow video recipes, behind-the-scenes shows, and the out-and-about trips. I love exploring the Yooniverse with you and Joe!
Hi Tracie! Thank you for your lovely comment. It really made both of us smile. We’re so honored that you are part of our Yooniverse. I’m so glad to know that you’ve given a couple of my recipes a try and liked them. Nice job on adding the apricot preserves. That sounds amazing. Yeah, Costco has so much stuff that I’m sure you’d find good use for shopping there, even if it’s just to stock up on paper towels or toilet paper in bulk! 🙂 Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.
Love this video! There’s no shame in buying convenience food. Better than eating ramen when you’re not in the mood or have time to cook =) I have a roommate but I usually cook/shop for one since we have different tastes. Maybe a blog post on shopping for one? I hate wasting food…
Hi Julie,
I love these kinds of videos and finding new products to try at Costco! I hope you continue to make more videos like this. Do you have an extra freezer to store all the food? I’ve been considering whether I should buy one or not because the one that came with our apartment is pretty small and I’m always shoving everything in there to make room!
