Vlog: Dinner at Pizzeria Mozza

Vlog: Dinner at Pizzeria Mozza

Judging by this fuzzy, dark, and unflattering freeze frame, you might think this is a video about me thoroughly enjoying some pizza. And you’re right! My friends and I went to Pizzeria Mozza, Mario Batali’s new restaurant in Newport Beach, located in Orange County, CA.  We wanted to check it out and see if it really was all the rage.  Of course I had to bust out my trusty video camera, which naturally made my friends vow that they would never invite me out to dinner again.  But they always say that… and what do you know, after a few minutes, they turned all loosey goosey, and fully participated in my “review.”

Really, who am I to review Mario Batali’s menu, but I still like to give my two cents.  All of my friends usually ask me, “do you analyze your food whenever you’re out at a restaurant?”  The truth is, yes I do.  But I’m not criticizing it.  I’m breaking down the flavors and textures in my mind and trying to figure out what ingredients they used or why a particular dish is so tasty (or in some cases, not so tasty).

But I’m happy to say that in this case, the genius in the orange clogs really out did himself.  The prices of the pizzas are a bit steep in my opinion, because they’re also very thin and small.  Four girls downed two pizzas, two large salami-filled salads, a bean bruschetta appetizer, and two desserts.  Really, I think the pizzas are supposed to imitate the size of the ones you’d get in Italy, where it’s almost like a personal pan.

But in any case, I love me a thin crust pizza any day.  And I was extremely happy because ever since I moved out of New York and New Jersey, I couldn’t find a good pizza in California.  I’m sorry to all you California natives.  I’m not trying to be a hater.  But really… help me!  I miss my CHEAP thin crust perfectly seasoned pizzas.  Okay, I’m done side-tracking now.

Bottom line, the pizzas were beautifully lightly charred, crispy, chewy, and well seasoned.  The tomato sauce was bombtastic.  And I was very impressed with their salad.  In fact, I even decided to replicate it at home, which I’ll post about in my next entry.

And like I said, we finished off the night with dessert.  Pictured here is the delicious banana gelato pie.  Yes, creamy cold banana gelato in a pie crust, dribbled in chocolate, and topped with whipped cream.  This was excellent, but we liked the other dessert, the Butterscotch Budino, which essentialy was a butterscotch pudding, even better.  YUM!  We all ate until we were about to explode and then waddled out of there, happy, tired, and excited to come back.

You can watch our little “review” and then go try out Pizzeria Mozza for yourself:
