Farm Fresh to Me

Farm Fresh to Me

I currently live within walking distance to a Farmer’s Market that they set up every Saturday. But in the case that you don’t, you can always order a surprise box of goodies from Farm Fresh To You.  My friend Janice had an extra account left with them, and forwarded it to me!  She claimed that I’d make better use out of it than she could, and was happy to have them send me this gorgeous bursting box of seasonal surprise goodies. And you know what? She’s right, because at least I would be someone who would blog about it!

This whole farm box thing is all part of community supported agriculture, so you’ll often hear it referred to as a “CSA box” for short.  It’s basically super fresh organic produce from local farms.  The tricky part is that you don’t know what you’ll get, because you’ll get whatever they give you. Whatever is growing on the farm, is what you’re gonna eat. So if you’re not down for all that, I getcha.  But you know me.  Bring on the challenges!

I truly clapped my hands and hopped like a bunny in excitement when we woke up to see this friendly looking box at our door.  I even put my coffee drinking on pause to whip out all of the contents from the cardboard casing.  It was like Christmas morning.

One by one, I pulled out the larger items, and then I couldn’t believe how much stuff was packed in there. Of course some of it were the basics… leafy green lettuce, a beautiful head of cabbage, crisp apples and sweet oranges…

And some of it was unexpected, such as ruby red swiss chard, leafy spinach and elegant looking asparagus. Heads up. I ended up using this fresh organic asparagus in one of our upcoming videos, so stay tuned!

But do you know what else I was excited about? These big fat bulbous scallions! Look at those suckers! For someone who uses scallions like in oh… every other dish she makes, it was like Christmas and my birthday in one!  Wait a minute… then I’d be Joe because his birthday IS actually on Christmas!

And then I couldn’t resist but take one last family portrait of all of the colorful goodies together.

And I am happy to report that not one thing in that box went to waste. Oh yeah!  I just kept cooking around the produce, and letting that dictate what I made.  You may even be able to see how I used up these delicious fresh babies.  Thanks to Janice for graciously donating to the Chef Julie fund and providing the key ingredients for many scrumptious meals. If you like challenges and want your own box delivered to your door, check out Farm Fresh to You.
