Baby Shower Cupcakes Adventure

Baby Shower Cupcakes Adventure

Somehow I agreed to make fondant bee cupcakes for my friend Shauna’s baby shower in New Jersey.  I never worked with fondant before, but I had the brilliant idea that this was the time to experiment with it.  Maybe I figured that I watched enough Ace of Cakes to handle it.  But yeah…things don’t work out that way!

The shower was a co-ed one, so Joe was invited to the festivities too.  And it worked out, because as you know, we were already on the east coast for a wedding.  It was held at Fleming’s Steak House, located at 90 The Promenade Edgewater, NJ 07020.  It was at a nicer venue because Shauna’s husband, Houng couldn’t be there.  He’s in the army and had to go overseas as soon as they found out they were pregnant!  So he wanted her to have a nice shower to help her feel special and loved.

And that’s what we set out to do.  The six party planners settled on the colors of the shower to be yellow and gray.  And the theme was baby bumble bees!

Our friend Christina purchased a cute professionally decorated fondant cake to serve as the centerpiece, and my cupcakes were meant to be the supporting cast, to supplement the dessert.

In the end, thankfully, they did look cute together, but that was a close call.  I dragged Christina into my shenanigans and we ended up staying up almost ALL NIGHT to get them done!

And because she’s such a good friend, she agreed to be on camera and film a vlog with me!  Joe may have contributed to the cupcake making too.  So if you want to see what we went through to make these cupcakes, watch our video:

The shower ended up being a success because everyone did their share, like make these awesome diaper centerpieces…

And come up with the games.  The amazing food was provided by the venue so I got a break from cooking this time!

In hindsight, I would’ve definitely done a few things different with the cupcakes, like not be cheap and spring for the $8 edible pens to DRAW in the eyeballs.  And I probably wouldn’t have bought those super flat sugar sheets.  I thought I was saving myself time by not having to roll out fondant myself, but the wings and stripes definitely would’ve looked more interesting being a bit more raised and three-dimensional.  Live and learn.

But in the end, I think they still came out rather cute.  Shauna told me people are still raving about the cupcakes, and that makes me so happy to hear.

We even had a chance to Skype with Houng from Kuwait, so we included him in the group photo!  The weather was behaving too and it was gorgeous outside, and that made Joe and me decide to film another vlog, while we were in Edgewater, NJ.  It’s the town we lived in when we first got married, so stay tuned for that one.
