I still feel like somebody has to pinch me because it’s hard to believe that this actually happened. Last summer, we had less than half the amount of YouTube subscribers as we do now, and for some WEIRD reason, we were asked to participate in this amazing event called the Foodie Happy Hour at YouTube Space LA! That’s right friends, I was asked to be a featured chef, along with a few others, where I was told that a couple hundred people were going to meet us and taste our food!
What I didn’t expect was that all the while, our cooking videos would be playing on this HUGE SCREEN behind me for all the world to see. I’ve honestly never seen my head so big!
This was an opportunity given to us by one of our AH-MAZE-ING partners, SideChef. They are a cooking app that we are fortunate to be paired up with, and they decided to throw a big ol’ shin dig in collaboration with YouTube Space LA. What was even more awesome was that this happened to land smack in the middle of our pre-planned family vacation to Disneyland. So we were already in the area and it couldn’t have worked out better in our dreams!
So yes, that meant we had to cut our family vacay a little short and missed out on some good bonding time, but our whole family was supportive and cheering for us… (from California Adventures). And we all agreed that it was worth it to do this event.
I even got to see my name in print on YouTube’s website. I mean, in what world does this happen to me? At the time, we had just completed filming Season 1 of our cooking show and I felt so green to this whole YouTube world. It was definitely an exhilarating experience to be part of this community and meet other wide-eyed energetic YouTubers at this event.
If you can’t tell by now, I’m still excited, but luckily, we filmed a VLOG so we could share our entire experience with you!

I’m not going to lie, once we got there, the food plating part was the most difficult and Joe had to step out from behind the camera to help me in the kitchen. So we couldn’t really capture all the prepping and assembling because we were going nuts. And after all that frenetic cooking, the food was gone in literally 5 minutes! Oh well… at least that meant they liked it!
We got to talk a bit with some people here and there, but it was loud and packed there so I’m not sure if anyone remembered me. But I probably enjoyed the personal time I got with the SideChef team the most. Up until this event, I only got to communicate with them through email, so it was nice to see their faces and get to know them as real people.
My takeaway thoughts of this event was that it was nice to be in a creative environment and be reminded that we’re not on this crazy path alone. I was inspired, encouraged, and honored to be there. Part of me wishes we were still living in CA so we could utilize the YouTube Space for filming opportunities and classes, but it was just nice to be there and enjoy it for the night… and I think my memories will last me for a while!
