She heard a lot about me and I heard a lot about her. People were always telling me about this “Amy” character. One day, we finally met and ended up joint catering a baby shower for our friend, Betty. I did the food, and Martha Stewart er… I mean Amy did the fruity frou-frou drinks, of course, with each champagne glass adorned with a fresh strawberry. We instantly hit it off and haven’t stopped chattering away ever since. She then went on to become one of my go-to sous chefs for most of my cooking gigs, and eventually her husband even produced all the music for our cooking videos. Yeah…we roped them in good! You know how we do!

But guess what… Amy is not a caterer. [...]

vlog: kitchen tour

vlog: kitchen tour

Let me start out by stating that I miss our green wall. The green accent wall you see on our videos was painted courtesy of our old apartment and it made all our pictures and videos really pop. This new apartment has only white walls and doesn’t offer painting for free. Therefore we won’t paint it on our own either. Yes, we are THAT lazy and cheap.

Secondly, I don’t know why on earth I chose to film this video when the light was all crazy, my hair was doing something funky, and the sun was going down. So sorry if everything looks extra dark. But I hope you still have fun snooping through my kitchen. [...]

egg dipped kimbap

egg dipped kimbap

This is another quick “non-recipe” recipe, but I thought I’d share this method of rescuing day-old kimbap, or Korean style seaweed wrapped rice rolls. I had leftover kimbap from a beach picnic that I didn’t want to throw out. As you might know, it’s usually not good the next day. This is partly because once you store it in the fridge, the rice becomes hard, stale, dry, and crunchy. It’s not normally meant to be eaten warm, so if you microwave it or reheat it in a pan, it might turn kind of weird, mushy, or possibly fall apart. But when you add eggs, your problems are solved! [...]

vlog: Q & A session 1

vlog: Q & A session 1

I’m really thankful for those of you who take the time to write me emails, leave comments on the blog, or interact with me on the facebook fan page. In fact, there have been quite a few of you who have asked me cooking questions, and I always try my best to get back to you. And you know that if I don’t know the answer to something, I’m pretty honest about it.

Anyhoo, I thought it was a shame not to share some of your questions with everyone else, because I’m sure a lot of us have similar concerns, problems, or thoughts.

So this week, I wanted to make a video response to answer a few of your great questions. [...]

orange and honey steak salad

orange and honey steak salad

It sure has been a while since our last video, huh? Well I’m glad to say we’ve got one for you today. I love a good juicy steak every now and then, but right now it doesn’t necessarily fit into the Yoon grocery budget. Do you hear the sad little violin playing in the background as you read this? Yeah, I usually walk by the meat counter and sigh when I see the steak section. Then I grab my usual chicken instead. But one day, I saw that there was a sale on steak at the grocery store, and I was all over it. Even though I got 2 fat sirloin steaks for $3.89, I still wanted to use it sparingly.

If you don’t know what the heck I’m talking about and you eat steak everyday, it’s cool. We can still be friends, and you can still enjoy this recipe. It’s perfect for a light meal, or hot weather. [...]

sempio brand kalbi sauce

sempio brand kalbi sauce

My all-time favorite food is kalbi, or Korean style marinated beef short ribs. There’s just something about the combination of tender beef with soy sauce, garlic, sesame oil, and sugar that makes my mouth water. And although my mom gave me a recipe for her own delicious marinade, I have yet to try it out to see if it will actually turn out just like hers. Upon my request, she even went through the trouble of measuring everything out in teaspoons and tablespoons, which is nearly impossible to get a Korean mom to do. So one day, I will gladly try it out for sure and let you know how it goes.

In the meantime, if you have ever been inside of a Korean grocery store, you’ve probably seen those bottles of pre-made kalbi marinade sauces. Have you ever been curious to see if they actually taste good? Well, the truth is, I have and did. I’ve been through several different brands, but none of them really hit the mark in my opinion. But one day, I saw this bag of Sempio kalbi sauce sitting next to a sale sign and thought, what the heck… it’s on sale, it couldn’t hurt. [...]
